Welcome to Shoalhaven SeaChange!
In
2003, Shoalhaven City Council, through the Economic Development
Office, undertook a project entitled “Operation SeaChange”. The
impetus for the project came from a situation that was emerging
at that time whereby organisations in both the private and
public sectors were encountering difficulty in attracting young
professional and technically trained employees. The problem was
exacerbated as major enterprises moved to the area requiring
staff with specific skills. An environment developed that saw
business and industry having to compete with each other to
recruit the employees they needed. It became vital that the
Shoalhaven attract new residents to the area to meet the needs
of business.
“Operation SeaChange” was supported by the IMB Community Foundation and
involved a research project that identified the motivating
factors for young professional people moving to the area. The
outcomes of this research, a series of interviews entitled
Young
Professionals, are displayed on this site. The project was
successful on two fronts; firstly, it provides an insight into
the factors that influence the location choices of people within
the research demographic, and secondly, it provides a tool for
marketing the attributes of the Shoalhaven to those
contemplating a career in regional NSW.
The
success of Operation SeaChange has prompted an expansion
of the project to include business operators on the premise that
the Shoalhaven has much to offer those wanting to conduct
business in the area. Again, a research biographer was briefed
to interview a range of business operators that have either
relocated an existing business to the Shoalhaven or established
or purchased a business in the area. The stories told by these
people are also now shared on this site as
SeaChange Entrepreneur
Profiles.
In this series, our local entrepreneurs have shared their
thoughts and experiences of establishing in the Shoalhaven – why
they did it, how their expectations were met and what they
encountered along the way.
Perhaps if you find connection with these experiences, you too
will consider a Shoalhaven SeaChange.
